Zero Chance  > Travel > Siem Reap, Cambodia
SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA - Siem Reap is a small town, nestled among rice paddy fields 4 hours drive on rocky roads north of the capital of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is home to the ancient Khmer Empire's great temple ruins. UNESCO has designated Angkor Wat as a World Heritage Site, but there are many other smaller complexes in the surrounding countryside that are just as significant, if not more beautiful to explore. In terms of archaeological significance, it rivals sites like the Pyramids of the Nile, Machu Pichu and the Mayan Ruins of Mexico. But unlike these other places, rampant development has not taken place and visitors are allowed to take in the unspoiled atmosphere up close. This will probably not be the case in a few more years.

Come with me and see Siem Reap through my eyes ...

Zero Chance > Like all the other temples, there are no pedestrian railings to keep people away from the carvings and structures. One can simply walk or sit anywhere and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Zero Chance > From Banteay Kdei, the guide took me through a forest walk to Ta Prohm. It was only since the late 1990's that the area was cleared of landmines.
Zero Chance > Trees at Ta Prohm.
Zero Chance > Ta Prohm is a sprawling monastic complex and a fine example of a "tree-in-temple". Intentionally left partially unrestored, massive fig and silk-cotton trees grow from towers and corridors offering many unusual picture opportunities.

Zero Chance > Walking through its dark corridors and open plazas, there are many unusual shapes. Here is one that looks like buttocks. One should definitely include Ta Prohm on any itineary. Go early in the morning to avoid the rush.
